“If you’re not happy going to work, you’re hosed! You spend most of your life working. You should pick a place where you can be happy; a place worth going to work for. I feel like we have created that at Axis Mechanical. Our people, projects and clients make this a place worth working for.”

Mike began his career in the Commercial HVAC industry in 1979. Initially starting as a truck driver for a mechanical shop, Mike quickly enrolled in a Sheet Metal apprentice program to advance his career. In a few short years, he grew from an apprentice to a Superintendent for the largest Mechanical Contractor in the Bay Area.

After a three-decade career working for some of the largest most reputable contractors, Mike leveraged the knowledge, experience and relationships he had gained to start Axis Mechanical with his two co-founders Tom Best and Jonathan Diaz. Ten years later, Mike is still an instrumental part of Axis Mechanical's day-to-day operations and manages some of our largest projects.

“If you want to make it in this career, you have to work harder and smarter than everyone else. It's the intersection of skill, hard work and good luck that create the best opportunities for you. Always be honing your skill and focusing on your work ethic. It will never steer you wrong.”

Tom knew early on he was mechanically inclined. He was fascinated by understanding how things work and at the age of 12, decided to completely disassemble his father's motorcycle to "see how it worked." Lucky for Tom, he reassembled it and found that it actually still worked. He realized then that he'd found his calling in the mechanical trades.

Tom started early in his career initially working for an electrical contractor (his dad was a Union electrician). After picking up custom metal plates from a large Mechanical Contractor, Tom saw firsthand the nature of the work and the very next day, began the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship process. Tom learned and moved up quickly in the trade and was running projects while still an apprentice. Fast-forward 30 years, and Tom has established himself as a local expert in the field, working on some of the most iconic buildings in the Bay Area, including the SAP Center.

“In life, if you're willing to work hard, you'll never be without opportunities. Overcoming challenges and winning drives me; this industry provides both. I'm proud to say I love being a Sheet Metal worker. It's not just about doing the job, it's about loving what you do and the team you do it with.”

Jonathan began his career more than 20 years ago, starting first in the Local 104 Sheet Metal Apprenticeship program and growing his career working on large projects for National Semiconductor and Sun Microsystems. As a Bay Area native, he's seen the area thrive and evolve and has always been inspired to leave his mark on the region through construction.

Jonathan's passion for Sheet Metal grew as he learned about ductwork and the artistry involved in completing a complex job. He credits his skill to the guidance and mentorship of experienced foremen early in career. Jonathan enjoys the challenges that come with the trade and believes that joining a skilled trade provides a lifetime of impactful, challenge work with great job security. With a deep love for his work, Jonathan is always striving to overcome project challenges to be of service to his clients and the team he has helped build at Axis Mechanical.
